About Spencer Svonavec

Spencer Svonavec — Founder, Rockwood Stone & Simkol Corp, Rockwood Pennsylvania

Spencer Svonavec is the founder of Rockwood Stone and Simkol Corp, headquartered in Rockwood, Pennsylvania. A fourth-generation miner and Pennsylvania native, he leads surface mining and aggregate operations across Pennsylvania and Maryland, employing 55 people and holding the state’s highest aggregate certification.

Spencer’s background is rooted in work. He trained alongside mechanics, welders, equipment operators, and farmers — the kind of hands-on education that doesn’t come from a classroom schedule. To make it work, he arranged his studies through PA Cyber School around early morning blocks so he could apprentice during the day. He graduated in 2022.

Rockwood Stone

Rockwood Stone is a certified aggregate producer located at 229 Substation Road, Rockwood, PA 15557. Spencer founded the company in Somerset County because the geology is right, the location serves western Pennsylvania’s construction market, and Rockwood is home.

After going through Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s full evaluation process — documentation, material testing, and a formal review of quarry operations — Rockwood Stone earned its Type A, Class E designation on Bulletin 14. That is the highest classification available for processed stone aggregate in Pennsylvania, and it means contractors on PennDOT projects and state-funded infrastructure can source from Rockwood Stone with full confidence in the material’s qualification.

Rockwood Stone employs a team of 55 and operates with dependable production schedules and responsible extraction practices. Land restoration is planned into operations from the start, not addressed after the fact.

Simkol Corp

Simkol Corp extends Spencer’s operations across the region. Together with Rockwood Stone, the companies reflect his approach to building durable operations in industries that require real skills, proper equipment, and teams that show up reliably.

Community

Spencer Svonavec believes a business rooted in a place has an obligation to contribute to it. Rockwood Stone has donated and built the new Great Allegheny Passage Trailhead entrance in Rockwood, completed the expanded parking lot at American Legion Post 279 on Rockdale Road, and donated all aggregate materials for the Somerset Playground Splash Pad.

These projects are not marketing. They use what Rockwood Stone does every day — equipment, materials, and crew — to improve something the broader community benefits from.

Family & Personal

Spencer Svonavec is the son of Jason Svonavec and Angela Svonavec. His companies remain headquartered in Rockwood, where his family’s mining history runs four generations deep. Outside of work, he has a strong appreciation for nature and outdoor pursuits — a perspective that informs how he thinks about responsible land use in his operations.
